The performance is a dance version/an artistic attempt to use the mechanism of Japanese entertainment to comment the condition of a contemporary human.

Her/His everyday life seems to dissolve in imitating, repeating, replacing herself with an even more interesting version of someone else each time. As Dubravka Ugrešić writes, karaoke gives the possibility of “transformation, metamorphosis and teleportation (…)”, allows you to escape “from the authentic self. SELF have become boring and belongs to a different culture. The culture of narcissism has mutated into a karaoke culture.”

The starting point for creators were not so much pop songs as various forms of performances – political, social and pop culture – treated as sources of identity codes enclosed in images. In dialogue with them, the dancers will try to recognize from what and how their own identity is built. Are they able to dissect a woman’s identity from massively reproduced, often oppressive, patterns?

As a quotation in the performance we have used visual materials from the film Fist of Fury (1972), dir. Wei Lo; series Sex and the City (1998-2004), dir. Michael Patrick King and the speeches of Margaret Thatcher from 1975, 1979, 1990.
